Jingyi Li
︎ Inquire
Li employs a variety of soft materials and their related production techniques to address layered histories, experiences, and emotions. Her studio seeks to evoke ideas about how femininity is constructed by the male gaze, which in turn informs a woman's historical usefulness, whether self-imposed or otherwise. Often focusing this examination through an East Asian lens, the artist approaches traditional materials with unconventional techniques, deliberately exaggerating certain aspects to highlight how culture can colonize, materialize, and fetishize womanhood.
Her series The Hidden Drawer is an expression of the artist’s own subjective appreciation of the eroticism of the everyday. It features objects traditionally associated with domestic life and women tightly entwined with handmade lace, as if to embrace them.
Jingyi Li (b. 1999, CN) graduated from Tsinghua University and completed her Master of Fine Arts at the Royal College of Art. She is currently a PhD candidate in Anthropology at Goldsmiths University, studying craft theory. Recent exhibitions include Absent Gallery (Guangzhou, CN); SET WOOLRICH (London, UK); ALSOLIKE Gallery (London, UK); Ramp Gallery (Beijing, CN); Norito Gallery (London, UK); Galerie Marzee (Nijmegen, the Netherlands); and Season Gallery (London, UK). She received the Special Jury Prize/Maison&Objet Design Award and was shortlisted for the Hari Art Prize. Li has guest lectured at Tsinghua University, Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, Shanghai University, and Nanjing University of the Arts. The artist lives in London, UK.
