Anousha Payne (b. 1991) graduated from Camberwell College of Arts with a BA in 2014. Through her creative exploration Payne questions the boundaries between lived experience, fiction and myth. Informed by Indian folklore, work often centers on characters from Indian folklore who display transformative qualities, playing on ideas of chance, moral dilemma, magic, animism and the performative powers of objects. Drawing inspiration from her dual Irish and Indian heritage, she weaves narratives and characters throughout her sculptures and paintings, forging her own iconography and lexicon.
Solo and two person exhibitions include Tender Mooring at Deli Gallery, New York, NY; thick mud slowly oozing at Stellarhighway in Brooklyn, NY; Tangled toes, twisted ears at Public Gallery in London, UK; As she laughs at Cooke Latham in London, UK; and, and here she dwells at Indigo+Madder in London, UK. Recent group exhibitions include Earthly Pleasures, Deli Gallery, New York, NY; New Ancients, Guts Gallery, London; Isabella Ducrot, Laila Tara H, Anousha Payne, Super Super Markt, Berlin, DE; Threads, Arnolfini Arts, Bristol, UK; Snakes in the Grass, Newchild Gallery, Antwerp, BE; Potheads, Swivel Gallery, Brooklyn, NY. Payne’s work has also been featured in Stronger than Language, Romero Paprocki, Paris, France; I take what is mine, Arusha Gallery at High Line Nine, New York, NY; It is better to be cats than be loved, Tabula Rasa, London, UK; Midsummer Night’s Dream at Alkinois in Athens, Greece; Hawala at Paradise Row in London, UK; Vessels at Island Gallery in Brussels, Belgium; Into the Soft at C4 Projects in Copenhagen, Denmark; and, HOT MILK at Post_Institute in London, UK, curated by Lucy Von Goetz and Oliver Morris Jones. Payne has been a resident at Cravieral Farmhouse, Craveiral, Portugal; London Bronze Editions, London, UK; Fores Project in London, UK; and, Villa Lena in Tuscany, Italy, and her commission 'Darling, Look' for The Absence of Paths, was presented in conjunction with the Tunisia Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale.
