Helen Frederick and Chris Mona
Helen Frederick (b. 1945) is recognized as a distinguished artist, curator, educator, coordinator of international projects, and as founder of Pyramid Atlantic. As an advocate for and an active participant in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area arts scene, she has served on the directorial boards of alternative art spaces, various local and national boards and peer-review panels. Frederick has carried out speaking engagements around the world, always emphasizing collaboration across disciplines. Throughout her life, her passion for diverse places and histories has led to extensive travel in order to observe the material cultures of societies around the world, their skills and ideas, while making connections between disparate cultural traditions.
Major solo exhibitions include Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA; Dieu Donne Gallery, New York; McLean Center for the Arts, McLean, VA; University for the Arts, Philadelphia, PA; Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Pittsburgh, PA; and Henie Onstad Museum, Oslo, Norway. Group exhibitions include Tokushima Museums of Modern Art, Tokushima, Japan; Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, Silver Spring, MD; Voorhees Zimmerli Museum, New Brunswick, NJ; RISD Museum of Art, Providence, RI; Federal Reserve Board, Washington, DC; National Museum for the Arts, Washington, DC; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; and, Leopold-Hoesch Museum, Duren, Germany. Frederick has taught numerous workshops and held residencies at Oxbow, Penland, Haystack, Hood College and Kent State University, to name a few. Additionally she has been awarded from ARTABLE, NEA/MidAtlantic Arts Foundation and Fulbright. Chris Mona was born in Washington, DC in 1961, graduating from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts in 1983, and from Pratt Institute with a Master of Fine Arts in 1985. Mona completed the Aluminum Plate Lithography Workshop at Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque, NM, under the direction of Rodney Hamon. On a recent sabbatical from Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) Mona researched egg tempera painting and metalpoint drawing. Mona is a full professor of art at AACC, Arnold, MD, where he directs its printmaking studio, Aqua Regia Press. Mona has received grants from Artists Space, NY, NY, and the Maryland State Arts Council. His work is in public collections, including Homestead National Monument, Beatrice, Nebraska; The Rooms Art Gallery of Newfoundland, St. John’s, Canada; College of Notre Dame, Baltimore, MD; Columbia College, Chicago, Ill; and Franklin Furnace Archive, NY, NY. Recent national juried shows include “28th Parkside National Print Exhibition,” U. Wisconsin Parkside; “Ink Press Repeat” Wm. Patterson University, NJ; and “Contested Spaces,” Harnett Museum of Art, U. of Richmond. Solo exhibitions include “Millennial Dreams and Dramas,” Creative Alliance, Baltimore; “Out of this World,” Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower, Baltimore; and most recently “in the time of not yet,” with collaborations with Helen Frederick, Rice Gallery, McDaniel College, Westminster, MD, and "Chasm: Intuition, Risk, and Certainty," collaborations with Helen Frederick, Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, Farmville, VA.
